BIO

Sarah Annis Haynes was raised in the small New England town of Windsor, CT where her appreciation of antiques and the history objects carry with them is rooted.  She has a Bachelor of Liberal Arts from the University of Connecticut, where her love of both art and literature were united, strengthening her sculptural expressions.  Ms. Haynes has been reviewed by Chet Hardin and her work has been exhibited at galleries such as the Risley Gallery in Litchfield, the AX Gallery in Torrington, Real Art Ways in Hartford and Kent State University.  Ms. Haynes currently resides in the northwest corner of CT where she continues her search for objects that reveal memories of those that have been quietly forgotten.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My sculptural process begins with taking everyday objects and manipulating them to express an emotional, poetic idea. Then I put them into a box.  I came to this method early in my study of contemporary art.   The process of hunting down items from tag sales, antique stores, flea markets and even online shopping was second nature to me, possibly because of some my favorite memories are those of going tag-saling and antiquing with my late father.

Overtime I have moved the items out of the box, into the world if you will – further anthropomorhosizing and delivering their content. In a time when Barbie is considered an antique and previously disposable cultural has become iconographic, my work plays with the meaning of things through words and through the cultural connotations of these objects. Human beings are the only creatures on this earth known to have memories – a past. That makes us who we are. It allows us, potentially, to have empathy for others. By bringing attention to these objects it is my intention to reveal the lives and meanings
attached therein.
